Samsung's Ultrasonic Galaxy Note 4

Samsung's Ultrasonic Galaxy Note 4 Cover gives a world of feedback for the visually impaired
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is on the way, and it looks like the South Korean giant could be working on some world-beating accessories to go with it! A new report has details on an upcoming ‘Ultrasonic Cover’, which is aimed at people with impaired vision, and it could revolutionise the way they interact with objects around them. Read on to find out more about what Samsung has up its sleeve for its incoming phablet!
According to Samsung fan site SamMobile, the new Galaxy Note 4 cover will boast ultrasonic tech, capable of recognising the proximity of objects by transmitting sound waves and monitoring the time taken for them to return. Bats use a similar (albeit natural) system to navigate in the dark, and the cover could make a massive difference for blind or visually impaired people.
It’s not the first time that Samsung has worked on an ultrasonic cover, as the company has released a similar case for its more affordable smartphones in the past that helped visually impaired people to get around. This time marks the first time that Samsung has launched such a cover for one of its flagship handsets though, and we could see a whole new collection of features to go along with it.
SamMobile adds that the ultrasonic sensor will detect nearby objects in front of the person, offering feedback to let them know how close or where they are. It also looks like Galaxy Note 4 users will be able to change the range of the ultrasonic signals, although the report explains that the area covered by the sensor will become narrower the more distance is added.
We can certainly imagine it making a massive difference for the visually impaired trying to navigate unfamiliar locations, offering a handy way of exploring surroundings all in a gizmo in your pocket.
There’s currently no word on pricing or availability, but it looks like the cover will be announced alongside the Galaxy Note 4 at Samsung’s Unpacked Episode 2 event at IFA on 3 September. We’ll be sure to bring you all the details as it happens!
