The iPhone 6 will be revealed 9 September

Apple event confirmed: The iPhone 6 will be revealed 9 September!
iPhone fans, hold onto your hats: just as rumoured, Apple has officially announced that its next big event is happening on 9 September, and it looks like the Cupertino giants have plenty to reveal. Mark it down on your calendars, as this will be the day that Apple finally takes the lid off the hotly anticipated iPhone 6 and much rumoured iWatch. Read on for all the details!
Apple has confirmed that it’ll be holding a huge media event on 9 September in Cupertino, along with the cryptic tag line “wish we could say more”. That could hint that Apple has plenty of goodies in store to show: we’re expecting to see not one, but two different sized iPhones, along with the company’s first major foray into the world of wearables with the iWatch, and the latest on iOS and OS X.
It also looks like Apple’s going over the top for the big day, as MacRumors reports that the iPhone maker has been building a huge, three-story building at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts – where the event will be taking place. Why is there so much space needed? Simply because Apple has lots to show, and you can bet that it wants to show off its wearable to as many people as possible.
There’s more to it too: the same location was where Steve Jobs first unveiled the original Macintosh computer 30 years ago, and it looks like Apple’s set to repeat history by revealing a product that could change everything for the company. Stay tuned, as we’ll be bringing you the latest from Apple’s event as it happens.

USB Condom

When you connect your mobile devices to USB ports to get a much-needed recharge, do you worry about what else that USB port might be up to?
The USB port is a wonderful concept – after all, being able to transfer data and power through a single connection seems genius, but how do you know that your device isn't leaking your secrets in exchange for that power top-up?
It works by electronically disabling the connector's data pins, which converts your USB cable into a charge-only cable, and thus prevents data from being transferred to or from your device. If you're worried about juice-jacking, then this is the device for you – a $10 USB Condom designed and built by security R&D consultation firm Xipiter. This is a small and unobtrusive dongle that sits between your device and the untrusted USB port, allowing your device to be recharged without fear that your data will be stolen or your device infected with malware.
All you have to do is pop the USB condom on the end of your charging cable, and you're ready for a recharge.
The USB Condom is available in three different flavors: Type A, Mini B, and Micro B connectors.
For $10, this seems like a must-have for road warriors and other folks who find themselves having to recharge their devices from untrusted USB ports.

iPhone with the Cabin charger

Magsafe-style charging skills arrive for your iPhone with the Cabin charger!
Cabin follows a long line of portable phone chargers, but this time you won’t need to carry an ugly plastic gadget around, nor cables to charge your iPhone on the go. Instead, Cabin packs in a Magsafe-style magnetic connector, just like Apple’s own MacBook range for quick connecting, and it simply clips onto the back of your iPhone. It looks fantastic, and it promises to give your phone extra juice when you need it most. Read on for all the details!
If you’re constantly pushing your iPhone 5s to the limit, you’ll surely notice the battery will quickly start to drop. A portable battery charger can be a life-saver, but it’s also another bit of kit to carry around – even if it’s incredibly thin like the Monster Powercard. Cabin takes a different approach, as it’s a classy aluminium battery slice that attaches to the bottom and rear of your iPhone, and it looks more like a high-end case than a battery.
Look at the charger from the front: the only hint that there’s something different about your iPhone is a small strip of aluminium under the bottom section, which complements your iPhone too. The premium materials and unibody finish blend in perfectly with Apple’s design itself, and the curved rear also looks pretty good and should fit in your palm nicely.
It’s the way that Cabin attaches to your iPhone that really makes it stand out though, with the charger clipping onto your phone magnetically – just like Apple’s own magnetic chargers for the MacBook range. You can even turn your Lightening cable into a magnetic charger, thanks to the accompanying MagAdapter and MicroAdapter that slots into the Lighning port on your iPhone, and just like it’s inspiration, it’ll fall away if tugged and won’t take your phone with it.
If you want to get your hands on a Cabin charger for your iPhone, you can simply head over to the Kickstarter page and make a pledge of $99 (£59), plus $10 for international shipping – which is a great price, considering what you get. Pledge $145 (£87) plus $20 for international shipping, and you can the whole bundle, including a matching charging dock too, capable of charging up both the iPhone and Cabin simultaneously. Is this the ultimate accessory for your iPhone?

Ritot Projection smartwatch

Ritot Projection smartwatch: Beam notifications and the time right onto your hand!
Meet the Ritot Projection watch, which is a smart timepiece with a difference. As the name hints, it projects everything you need to know straight onto your hand, which means there’s no need for a screen, giving you a wearable that looks more like a bracelet or vibrant fitness band than a smartwatch. Fancy one of these?
It’s not just the time that the Ritot is capable of projecting onto your hand in huge numbers, as the watch can hook up to your smartphone and give you a whole host of useful notifications. The Ritot app aims to offer incoming caller ID, text messages, reminders, email, social media, weather updates and all sorts of other notifications, beamed straight onto your wrist for 10 seconds, or you can make them disappear with a shake of your wrist.
You’ll also be able to change the colour of the projection, although how easily you’ll be able to see notifications in bright sunlight and with lighter colours remains to be seen. Other features are set to include fitness tracking, and with a potentially massive display (in comparison to other fitness trackers like the Fitbit, at least), the Ritot Projection smartwatch could be the ideal get-fit partner!
The actual projection comes courtesy of a pico projector built into the side of the watch, and it’s set to work alongside the current major smartphone operating systems, including Android, iOS and Windows Phone. The designers even claim to be working on compatibility for other platforms – a smartwatch for BlackBerry, anybody?
Check out the Ritot projection watch in action below:
Want to get your hands on one? Visit the Ritot Indiegogo page and pop down a pledge of $120 (£72). The designers behind Ritot have already more than smashed their original $50,000 (£29,883) goal, raising a staggering $951,372 (£568,613), so the project is definitely going ahead. It’s currently still at a concept stage though, and you’ll have to wait until February next year before deliveries start, but it looks like Ritot could be one of the coolest smartwatches yet!

Meet bKey, the tiny cable-free battery

Meet bKey, the tiny cable-free battery that tops up your phone on the go!
The bKey is a portable phone battery with a difference, ditching all cables and proving small enough to slip onto your keyring. It means you’ll always have the bKey with you when you need it most, and there’s never any worry about finding cables to help charge either your phone or the bKey itself. Read on to find out more!
The bKey looks perfectly at home on a keyring, being shaped like a key itself. Unlike a regular key though, there are a couple of covers hiding each end of the tiny charger; remove them and you’ll find a USB connection for charging the bKey itself, and either a microUSB or Lightning adapter (depending on the version you go for) at the other end to re-juice your phone.
The fact both adapters are integrated neatly into the bKey is a massive bonus, as it means you’ll have everything you need if you run out of power when you’re out and about. Time to say goodbye to frantic searches for the correct adapters or charging cables!
The bKey is the second cool-looking portable battery we’ve seen this month, following in the footsteps of the Cabin iPhone charger, but this time you’ll have a lot more choice when it comes to charging up different phones.
The tiny size of the bKey means there’s only space to cram in a 230mAh battery – so you won’t get the same sort of performance expected from chargers like the 1,600mAh Monster Powercard, but then again it’s not designed for that. Instead, it’s designed to give your phone a boost when things are getting desperate, giving you a claimed 30 additional minutes of talk time so you can finish that all-important phone call or wait for text messages when trying to arrange a lift home.
Find out more about bKey in the video below:
Want to get your hands on a bKey? You’ll need to visit the bKey Kickstarter page and make a pledge of $20 Canadian dollars (£11) if you own a microUSB-based smartphone or iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4s. If you own a later iPhone, like the iPhone 5s, you’ll need to pledge $25 Canadian dollars (£14) for the Lightning-compatible version. Deliveries are expected in December this year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Five things we want to see in the Samsung Galaxy Note 4
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phablet is coming in fast, and we can’t wait! If Samsung’s event invite is anything to go by, you’ll be seeing it pop up at this year’s IFA tech expo in the next couple of weeks, but what will the South Korean tech giant have in store? Here are just a few top-notch tech ideas we’d love to see pop on Galaxy Note 4 when it’s revealed on stage.
Even bigger screen with a Quad HD display
With smartphones like the LG G3 making Quad HD screens available for the masses, it’d be great to see a stunning 2,560×1440 resolution on the new Galaxy Note 4. Phablets are already brilliant for watching Netflix and your favourite movie clips on, along with checking out websites and e-books, but imagine how much better the Galaxy Note 4 would be with a pin-sharp high-res display! And why not go bigger? The Galaxy S5 is catching up to the screen-size of the Note 3, blurring the line between smartphone and phablet, which is why we’d love the Note 4 to go even bigger. It’s looking increasingly likely that the Galaxy Note 4 will indeed get that impressive Quad HD screen too, with an Indonesian e-seller spilling the (possible) beans when it comes to specs – but we’ll have to wait and see the official reveal to get a peek at what’s packed into the chassis.
Super-thin bezels
It’s all very well packing in more pixels, or perhaps even a larger screen, but wouldn’t it be great if Samsung could actually manage to make the overall package a little smaller? We’re thinking even thinner bezels, which would make the phablet look incredibly slick. We think if the Note 4 comes armed with an edge-to-edge screen, not only would it look fantastic, it could even be made a little smaller too. Although how Samsung would pack in the front-facing camera if it wanted to stretch the display to the very top of the phone remains to be seen – perhaps it could even be moved to the bottom?
Better stylus powers
Samsung’s AirView feature could help to keep the screen on the Galaxy Note 4 looking brand new for months, or even years, with no need to actually touch the display to carry out functions. That means fewer smudges, scratches and scuffs, and it could be even better when you’re using a stylus on your Galaxy Note phablet. That’s why we’d love to see Samsung make its AirView feature even more accurate, and throw in features like pressure detection and even better support for gestures, letting you swipe and waft your hands (or the stylus) around to whizz around the OS.
All-metal design
Having unleashed the Galaxy Alpha last week, Samsung showed that it’s not happy to settle for second best in the build quality stakes. And with one full metal smartphone now in the Galaxy family, there’s no reason the South Korean giant can’t bless the Galaxy Note 4 with a slick aluminium shell either. A metal design for the Galaxy Note 4 would certainly be a timely introduction, too, with the iPhone 6 phablet reportedly also just around the corner.
Gear VR skills
Samsung has been working on its own virtual reality headset for a little while now, and it looks like the Gear VR will feature a modular design where your Samsung smartphone docks into the headset and doubles up as the actual display. If the Galaxy Note 4 does get a bigger, better, Quad HD screen, we want to see it work with the upcoming headset, and it could be the perfect smartphone to slot inside and use as a stunningly crisp VR display.

Sony's working on a selfie-centric camera that looks like a perfume bottle

Sony's working on a selfie-centric camera that looks like a perfume bottle!
2014 is certainly the year of the wearable, but they’ve had to share the stage with the explosive rising popularity of the selfie. It looks like Sony’s not content with unleashing onegadget that’s focused on selfies: it’s going all out with an upcoming Cyber-shot camera that looks like a perfume bottle, and it even boasts a swivelling lens to frame that perfect self-portrait. Fancy one of these?
It may not look like any camera we’ve seen before, but a new leak spotted at GForGames has revealed that Sony’s working on a new selfie-centric camera that packs in a huge viewfinder and an equally large lens. It also looks like it’s set to be very fashion focused too, thanks to its perfume bottle design and its crystal-esque lid that houses the 360-degree swivelling camera lens, breaking away from your traditional camera design.
While there are no concrete specs listed for the odd-looking camera, Japanese websiteDigicame Info has reported on a new Sony compact camera known as the KW1 that looks like it could fit the bill. That snapper has been reported to be packing a small 1/2-3-inch 19.2-Megapixel Exmor RS sensor, along with a Sony G lens setup with 21mm and 23mm conversion lenses. It sounds like something more suited to a wearable camera, and it could be the ideal setup for a selfie cam. It also looks like it’ll be packing in Wi-Fi, NFC compatibility and a companion app, but whether these cameras are related will be revealed later this week.
Sony’s planned an event for 22 August in China, where it looks like it’ll be fully unleashing the camera – you can expect to see more details on the selfie cam as soon as we hear them.

Samsung's Ultrasonic Galaxy Note 4

Samsung's Ultrasonic Galaxy Note 4 Cover gives a world of feedback for the visually impaired
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is on the way, and it looks like the South Korean giant could be working on some world-beating accessories to go with it! A new report has details on an upcoming ‘Ultrasonic Cover’, which is aimed at people with impaired vision, and it could revolutionise the way they interact with objects around them. Read on to find out more about what Samsung has up its sleeve for its incoming phablet!
According to Samsung fan site SamMobile, the new Galaxy Note 4 cover will boast ultrasonic tech, capable of recognising the proximity of objects by transmitting sound waves and monitoring the time taken for them to return. Bats use a similar (albeit natural) system to navigate in the dark, and the cover could make a massive difference for blind or visually impaired people.
It’s not the first time that Samsung has worked on an ultrasonic cover, as the company has released a similar case for its more affordable smartphones in the past that helped visually impaired people to get around. This time marks the first time that Samsung has launched such a cover for one of its flagship handsets though, and we could see a whole new collection of features to go along with it.
SamMobile adds that the ultrasonic sensor will detect nearby objects in front of the person, offering feedback to let them know how close or where they are. It also looks like Galaxy Note 4 users will be able to change the range of the ultrasonic signals, although the report explains that the area covered by the sensor will become narrower the more distance is added.
We can certainly imagine it making a massive difference for the visually impaired trying to navigate unfamiliar locations, offering a handy way of exploring surroundings all in a gizmo in your pocket.
There’s currently no word on pricing or availability, but it looks like the cover will be announced alongside the Galaxy Note 4 at Samsung’s Unpacked Episode 2 event at IFA on 3 September. We’ll be sure to bring you all the details as it happens!

Omate X smartwatch unleashed

Watch out Android Wear: Omate X smartwatch unleashed!
Not only does the Omate X smartwatch look stunning, it also works with both Android and iOS-based smartphones. It’s one of the few recent smartwatches to eschew Google’s Android Wear OS, and it may be all the better for it!
It’s been a great year so far for smartwatches, with gadgets like the Moto 360LG G Watchand Samsung’s own techy timepieces basking in the limelight. Things are about to get even better with the introduction of the Omate X – a follow-up to the Omate Truesmart Kickstarter project.
The Omate X certainly has the looks to succeed. Sure, it doesn’t have the stylish round face found on the Moto 360, but it does have a gorgeous aluminium finish, an almost infinite choice of straps (thanks to a standard watch strap size) and some lovely digital watch faces.
The specs are pretty good too. The 1.54-inch touchscreen gets a reasonable 240×240 resolution, it connects to your phone over Bluetooth 4.0, and Omate claims the X’s 400mAh battery will last for seven days between charges – a vast improvement on the current Android Wear offerings. It might have a proprietary OS, but still does everything you could need it to.
Once connected to your smartphone, the Omate X can deliver information like incoming calls, push notifications and messages, reminders, weather updates and more. It may not offer the same sort of customisation as an Android Wear smartwatch, but as long as it can manage the above smoothly and efficiently, we’re happy.
And better yet, the Omate X will be available to pre-order next month with a price tag of just $129 (£77) – a snip compared to most rivals. Interested? Find out more about the Omate X on the company’s website.

Samsung's 3-in-1 charger

Samsung's 3-in-1 charger juices your phone, tablet and e-book reader at onceSamsung's 3-in-1 charger juices your phone, tablet and e-book reader at once
More and more devices have microUSB ports nowadays, but keeping them all charged can be a nightmare. Unless you have this handy device from Samsung, that is.
It’s a charger that juices three devices at once. Plug the USB end into a USB-enabled plug, and the microUSBs into whichever devices need juicing up. And away you go.
It’ll power up smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, Bluetooth headsets, e-book readers… basically anything with a microUSB port. And they don’t have to be Samsung devices either.
It divides the 2A signal between the three devices as well. So if you’re only powering up two at once, the power flows faster to each than if you had three plugged in.
The charger is small enough to fit in your pocket or purse, so you’ll never run out of juice on the go. As long as there’s a plug socket nearby, you’re sorted.
It’s great to see an accessory from a big mobile company that’s genuinely useful, and that isn’t exclusive to its own products. Bravo Samsung!
The bad news is it’s only up for pre-order in the US at the moment, priced at $39.99 (£24). We’ll let you know if it comes to these shores.

3D Pocketcopter flying camera

A high-flying idea: Meet the 3D Pocketcopter flying camera!
The 3D Pocketcopter is a tiny flying camera currently on Indiegogo. It’s more compact than the current crop of drones like the AR Drone 2.0 – indeed, the maker claims it’s the “world’s smallest flying camera”. It’s very affordable, too. But is it an idea that’ll take off?
It certainly looks unique, with twin rotors attached to the top of its cylindrical camera body. It can’t fly any higher than 10m, so it looks like the ideal gadget for indoor shots from unusual perspectives. The camera is also capable of recording video in 3D, and you can even strip off the rotor blades and use the Pocketcopter as a stand-alone camera.
It’s no AirDog, but then that has an expected retail price of $1,500 (£884), while the 3D Pocketcopter can be had for a pledge of just €89 (£71). So our expectations are a little lower.
You control it using your iOS, Android or Windows Phone handset. If you lose your Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection, it’ll float safely back down to ground.
Want to get your hands on one? Head over to the Indiegogo page and make that pledge of €89!

Invisible wearable chair

The Noonee Chairless Chair is like no wearable we’ve ever seen. It straps to your legs and lets you sit down wherever you are, as if you were perched on a chair. You may look a bit daft, but we absolutely love the concept! Read on to find out more.
Say you’re waiting for a bus. Wouldn’t it be great to sit down for a bit? Now you can, with the Noonee Chairless Chair. It effectively lets you sit down on thin air.
The man behind Noonee – Keith Gunura – worked in a packaging factory, and came up with the concept to help workers who have to stand for hours on end. And when the Chairless Chair isn’t in use, the 2kg device can bend and move with your legs, letting you walk around unhindered.
It’s made out of an aluminium and carbon fibre frame, and variable dampers that support the weight of your body. There’s also a 6V battery that powers the chair and keeps it in the desired position for up to 24 hours.
Here it is in action:
Although it may be designed to boost productivity in the workplace, we can think of some far more worthy uses! The pub queue will never be the same again, festivals could be a lot more comfortable, and never again will you need to argue over that sole remaining seat on the train!
At present, the Noonee Chairless Chair remains a concept, but hopefully it’s only a matter of time before it becomes reality. Check out Noonee’s website to find out more

Windows 9 preview expected next month

Microsoft is expected to deliver an early preview version of Windows Threshold next month, the codename for what will likely be named Windows 9. The software maker has been gradually working on the release over the past several months, adding and tweaking features ready for a "technology preview" release to the public. Microsoft has been sharing early builds of Threshold to close OEMs and partners, and ZDNet reportsthat a public preview is expected next month or early October.
The Windows 9 preview will be similar to how Microsoft first let developers test Windows 8, with features not fully complete or missing. ZDNet claims updates will be pushed to users who install the preview on an automatic basis, meaning the release will change rapidly over the coming months before it's finally ready. Existing internal versions of Threshold include a new mini Start Menu, "Metro-style" apps that float in separate windows on the desktop, a virtual desktops feature, the removal of the Charms bar feature, and an early version of Cortana. Microsoft is also making several UI changes to Windows 9, including some tweaks on the desktop to improve upon Windows 8.

Meet 50 Cent's heart rate-tracking headphones

Meet 50 Cent's heart rate-tracking headphones!
Can’t bring yourself to buy a pair of Beats headphones now that Apple owns the company? 50 Cent’s SMS Audio may have the ideal solution in the form of the BioSport In-Ear, a distinctive pair of earbuds that also manages to squeeze in a heart rate monitor too! Is tracking your fitness getting a little out of hand? Read on for all the details!
At first glance, SMS Audio’s BioSport In-Ear look pretty much like any other pair of fitness themed earphones. They’re slightly more angular than your standard bud, plus there’s a distinctive hook on the top to keep them in your ear and the bright colouring helps them to stand out from the crowd – but there’s nothing in the design to give away that there’s some serious tech packed into the compact casing.
Not only are the BioSport headphones capable of booming sound into your ears while you run, SMS Audio has teamed up with Intel to pack in an integrated optical sensor that’s capable of tracking your heart rate as you go. Fitness and health monitoring is built into plenty of different tech wearables, with everybody from Samsung to Microsoft getting in on the action, but this looks to be the first time that any form of fitness tracking has been built into a pair of headphones.
50 Cent’s BioSport earphones work alongside running companion app Runkeeper to help you to monitor everything from heart rate to the pace you’ve been running at, and it could shape up to add to your perfect fitness regime. While there’s a seemingly endless stream of wearables also offering similar features – from the Samsung Gear Fit to Fitbit, whether we really need a pair of fitness tracking earbuds remains to be seen – but it could definitely suit those who don’t want to keep something on their wrist at all times.
Still, if you’re going to listen to music anyway, it’s one less gadget to carry around and it could be the ideal workout partner, as the BioSport earphones also have a couple of other tricks too. The headphones are IPX4 certified, which means that they’re rated to deal with water and can keep on going even if you’re heavily sweating or if it starts raining during your run. Don’t worry about charging the headphones either, as the biometric sensor draws all of its power from the 3.5mm cable. Throw in that notable hook shape, which is designed to help the earbuds stay in place however hard you train, and they really could be the ideal buds for a serious workout. If you’re interested in these buds, the SMS Audio Biosport In-Ear headphones are set to launch at the end of the year – but there’s currently no priced attached at the moment. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the latest as soon as we hear it.

Meet the smart helmet

Skully: Meet the smart helmet that packs in a heads-up display, rear-view camera and GPS navigation!
Helmets probably aren’t the first thing that spring to mind when you think of smart tech, but the new Skully AR-1 is definitely smarter than average. This new Indiegogo project crams in a surprising amount of features, including a heads-up display and a rear-view camera, helping to keep you more aware of what’s going on around you, making for what could be the ultimate life saver. Want one of these?
Claiming to be the “world’s smartest motorcycle helmet”, the Skully AR-1 offers all the details you’re ever likely to need while hitting the highway, showing you plenty of information on a heads-up display in front of your eyes. It means you won’t need to look away from the road at any point, and it may even save you from needing the protective qualities the Skully AR-1 also has to offer.
The heads-up display offers handy info like the speed you’re travelling at, with Bluetooth onboard too making it possible to see and respond to incoming call. Those are handy features to help keep your eyes on the road, but its the rear-view camera projected in the corner of the visor that could really prove to be a life saver.
With GPS also built into the helmet, the Skully AR-1 can even offer turn-by-turn directions, displayed discretely at the top of your visor, so again there’s no need to take your eyes off the road. It’s not just about vision either, as the Skully AR-1 can also stream music to your ears via Bluetooth from your smartphone.
Want to get your hands on the Skully AR-1? Head over to the company’s Indiegogo page, where a pledge of $1,599 (£953) will get a helmet delivered to you around May 2015. It’s certainly not the cheapest helmet on the market, but with all that tech crammed in, it looks like it could be the ultimate helmet for taking on the road – and it could end up saving your life too.

Apple iPhone 6, OnePlus OneWatch, HTC One (M8) Windows, Galaxy Note 4

Apple iPhone 6, OnePlus OneWatch, HTC One (M8) Windows, Galaxy Note 4: Gadget Digest
The past five days have seen some massive gadget stories, from the launch date of the Apple iPhone 6 to a brand new Windows Phone HTC One (M8), proving the perfect week for smartphone fans. There’s also been loads of other top tech, too. Whatever your favourite gadget, grab yourself a cuppa, sit back and enjoy the week’s biggest stories in our gadget digest.
A crazy busy week for phablets!
The past couple of weeks have been pretty dry when it comes to phablets and phones, with manufacturers keeping their cards close to their chest. Things have changed this week, with a ton of handsets hitting the headlines. Handsets like the upcoming Apple iPhone 6, which now looks likely to launch on 9th September! A brand new iOS phablet? We can hardly wait!
Not to be outdone, Samsung also looks like it’ll be updating its feature-packed Note range, with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on the way next month. The South Korean giant has been tight-lipped on what the features will include, but it’ll have to be good if Samsung wants to stay on top when it comes to phablets.
Chinese manufacturer Lenovo also fancies a bit of the action, with the stunning-looking Vibe Z2 Pro making an official appearance in Asia. The Quad HD metal phablet may not have made its way over to these shores yet, but fingers crossed it’ll pop up in the near future.
Lots of smartphone choice too!
If you fancy something a little smaller, and also want to avoid Android and iOS, HTC could have the perfect solution in the form of a new Windows Phone One (M8). Packing in all the same hardware and specs as the regular HTC One (M8), but running Microsoft’s tile-based operating system, it could topple Nokia to become the new king of Windows Phone!
If you’re on a tighter budget, the new Kogan Agora 4G could be the ideal smartphone for you, cramming 4G LTE, a 720p screen and Android 4.4 KitKat into an attractive handset that costs just £149. The best value smartphone yet? It could well be!
A fresh smartwatch invasion
There’s been a lot going on when it comes to smartwatches, too, with the OnePlus OneWatchset to offer a stylish alternative to the Moto 360. Just like the 360, the OneWatch eschews a square screen in favour of a more traditional spherical shape, and to our eyes it looks all the better for it.
While the majority of smartwatches out there need a smartphone to work alongside, theTimex Ironman One GPS+ does things a little differently, offering 3G connectivity that lets the watch connect with apps and broadcast your fitness stats to the world all without being anywhere near your smartphone!
And in other news…

There was good news for e-reader fans this week, with the budget Nook GlowLight coming to the UK for just £89. We also loved the idea of the Mimoto Smart Pen, which promises to turn any regular computer or laptop display into a giant tablet. If you really want something to kick your weekend off in style though, how about an alarm clock that can wake you up with coffee!

Amazon’s mortal enemy returns this month

The Nook is back: Amazon’s mortal enemy returns this month with a little help from Samsung!
It’s been a little over a year since bookseller Barnes & Noble conceded defeat and gave up on manufacturing its own Android tablets, but low and behold, the Nook has risen from the dead. Samsung’s teamed up with B&N to resurrect the Kindle Fire rival in the shape of the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook – and it’s coming this month.
The new seven-inch Android tablet will come preloaded with Nook’s ebook software, and be sold in US Barnes & Noble stores when it’s launched later this month. The two companies originally announced their plans to buddy up back in June, but it appears we’ll be getting a closer look on 20 August at a press event to reveal the device.
Details are still thin on the ground, but you can bet that the new Galaxy Tab – which will be a close competitor to Amazon’s Fire HDX 7 tablet – will come packed with Nook software, including its movie, book and app stores, and hopefully its excellent comic book reading software too.
We were huge fans of the dazzling display on the similarly sized Nook HD, if not its somewhat laggy software, so Samsung will have to outdo itself to improve on it. Stay tuned for more in a fortnight on Samsung’s latest Amazon, Nexus and iPad rival.

Meet the fitness band

Amiigo: Meet the fitness band that can track your complete gym workout!
We’re currently surrounded by fitness bands and wearables, most of which aim to track our fitness, with some opting for GPS and heart rate tracking too, but the one area that’s been sorely missing? Free weights. Enter the Amiigo fitness bracelet, which aims to track your gym workout by itself leaving you to do the heavy lifting. Fancy one of these?
The Amiigo Bracelet is similar to your typical fitness tracker, only this one aims to go further by tracking specific exercises and the reps of your weights too. It comprises of two parts: a bracelet and a shoe clip, both of which are waterproof and can keep up with your typical workouts. The shoe clip tracks your lower body movement, while the bracelet tracks your upper body activities, giving you much more complete and accurate tracking.
The Amiigo designers have promised that it’ll be able to track over one hundred different activities, and it can track data such as exercise type, reps, sets, intensity, speed and duration, all adding up to suit your own fitness goals. It can also capture heart rate, blood oxygen and skin temperature data, for even more data on how your workout affects your body. Even if it doesn’t know what exercise you’re doing, you can teach it too.
Not only does it track your free weight training sessions too, it’ll be able to tell you how well you did, grading you on your form, all thanks to gesture recognition technology. While your running might be grade-A, if your form on your shoulder raises or squats is slightly off, the Amiigo will inform you of your missteps, giving you a lower grade. The smartphone app for your iPhone or Android blower will also give you back all the feedback you need to improve, and you can compete against your friends too – all to help make this tracker the ultimate gym workout buddy.
When you’re not in the gym, the Amiigo also acts as a regular tracker, such as counting your steps, tracking your calories burned, and letting you know how you’ve slept, making for one complete tracking bracelet. If you’re interested in grabbing one, you’ve still got a little bit of time to wait though: while the Amiigo smashed its crowd funding goal on Indiegogo back in 2012 and is shipping out some hardware to early backers, it won’t be shipping out pre-orders until next month – and some reports say that it won’t be available until January. For $179 (£106) though, it does look great, and we know we can’t wait for it, as it looks to be the ultimate fitness gadget for both inside and outside the gym.

Meet the smartwatch that doesn’t need to be tied to a phone

Meet the smartwatch that doesn’t need to be tied to a phone!
We’ve seen loads of smartwatches from tech manufacturers like Samsung and LG, but the majority of watch companies have stayed away from smart tech. Timex isn’t thinking twice about jumping in though, as it’s just unleashed the new Ironman One GPS+ smartwatch yesterday, and better yet, you don’t need a smartphone to pair it with! Read on for all the details!
The Timex Ironman One GPS+ watch gets its own 3G connectivity, letting the time piece connect to fitness apps without actually having to be anywhere near your smartphone. It means you’ll be able to ditch the phone when you go out on a run, with the watch capable of tracking and broadcasting your progress as you go.
As the name (not so subtly) hints, GPS is built-in, and along with tracking your location, the Timex Ironman One GPS+ also offers a Find Me Mode, sending an alert with your exact location in an emergency. Perfect for fans of extreme sports or lone walkers.
Tracking features include speed, distance and pace – just like the Samsung Gear Fit – and you can share all your performance stats through social media sites like Facebook using the watch itself. 4GB of storage is included too, offering enough space to store your fave running tracks, and Bluetooth makes it easy to hook up a pair of wireless headphones.
Unlike the current crop of smartwatches, the Ironman One GPS+ doesn’t run Android Wear, running its own OS instead. It should be more than capable when it comes to fitness tracking and keeping the world updated on your progress though.
Interested in the Ironman One GPS+? It’s set to hit the company’s website costing $399 (£237), with the range-topping model offering an integrated heart rate monitor for $449 (£267). We’ll keep you updated if we hear word you can grab it in your local shop.

Siri could soon be popping up on your Mac

Siri could soon be popping up on your Mac!
Siri, the ever-present iPhone assistant in your pocket, could soon be breaking out of its phone and tablet confines according to a new patent application by Apple. In fact, the handy helper could be hitting your Mac, giving you a hand on your desktop or laptop when you need it, all from a simple voice command. Fancy Siri on your computer? Read on for all the details!
AppleInsider has spotted Apple’s latest patent application filing, which looks to bring the iPhone assistant to its desktop operating system. Apple has plans to soup up Siri for its desktop appearance, giving it more complex actions such as dealing with file and system management, or using it to help find specific images, YouTube videos or documents.
You’ll be able to ask Siri to send emails, copy and hold files and more, just like on your phone from a voice command, but with greater abilities to help you with your desktop tasks, unlike the rather basic actions it can currently do on your iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately though, there’s no clear sign of when Siri will be hitting your trusty Mac, meaning you’ll be having to wait before you can bark orders at your computer.
So far in the upcoming OS X Yosemite release beta, there are no references to an assistant or Siri-style helper, meaning that Siri for Mac could be on the way in a future version of the OS, and won’t be here in time for Yosemite’s launch later this year. The patent application is also just that – an application, and not a clear cut sign of what Apple has planned. Siri on Mac does make a lot of sense though, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the digital assistant pops up in the future – and when it does, we’ll be sure to fill you in with all the details as soon as we hear it.

Mimoto smart pen turns your computer into a touchscreen

Mimoto smart pen turns your computer into a touchscreen!
We’ve seen plenty of everyday household objects pick up extraordinary new super powers thanks to technological breakthroughs in recent years, from clothing to spectacles andGoogle Glass, but the humble pen has remained largely analogue. Mimoto Tech hopes to change this with the introduction of the Mimoto Smart Pen – a gadget capable of turning regular computer monitors and laptop displays into giant touchscreens! Fancy one of these?
Meet the Mimoto Smart Pen, a brand new tech-infused pen that’s capable of plenty more tricks than just being used to fill out your crossword. Although it can be used as a regular pen, its most impressive feature has to be the ability to turn regular computers into touchscreen tech.
You can use the Mimoto Pen as a stylus, even on devices without integrated touchscreens; simply whip out the ink refill, whack in the soft-tipped refill, clip the Mimoto sensor onto the side of your monitor and you’re good to go! The sensor tracks exactly what you’re doing, letting you move the cursor and scroll around the screen exactly as you would using a regular stylus. It’s a great way of turning your Mac into a giant touchscreen computer, and it also looks pretty cool for playing the latest crop of touchscreen games like Fruit Ninja.
The Mimoto Pen can also track your regular handwriting in real time, converting it into digital words as you go. There’s another sensor that sits alongside your notepad, monitoring your movements and it transforms your analogue scribbles into digital text and images, so you can write on paper as you normally would and everything gets backed up instantly.
The latter is the sort of feature we’ve seen before on devices like the Livescribe smart pen, which can send details of everything you’ve written straight to your smartphone. This time, however, it’s just one of multiple features, and you won’t need special notepaper to write on either.
Take a look at the Mimoto Smart Pen in action:
Want to get your hands on one? The gadget is currently over on Kickstarter, where Mimoto Tech is attempting to raise $20,000 (£11,849) to ramp up production. If successful, you’ll be able to grab a smart pen by pledging $119 (£70) – quite a saving over the expected $179 (£106) retail price. Deliveries are expected to start in November 2014, meaning you won’t have too long to wait to add touchscreen powers to your computers!
